There is widespread renewed interest in integrated weed management practices across the globe. Integrated weed management is an established strategy that utilizes a range of chemical, nonchemical, and preventative weed management tools to manage weed populations in a comprehensive approach while minimizing adverse impacts on the environment and human health. The goal of integrated weed management is generally not to remove chemical weed control but rather to identify and implement complementary, effective biological, cultural, mechanical, preventative, and chemical practices, which can be used in a multidisciplinary approach. While the concept is not new, there are advances in technology and practices, which can be adopted and enhance the effectiveness of integrated weed management in small- and large-scale operations. Integrated weed management is a staple for weed management in many parts of the world; however, in areas with broadacre crop production, it remains underutilized and has not been widely adopted. Drivers of this new interest in integrated weed management range from increased chemical resistance to societal pressure for sustainable production systems or environmental protection concerns through government regulation. Integrated management approaches are necessary to diversify management, augment weed control and production practices, and maintain long-term sustainability in farming operations. While a collective adoption of integrated weed management strategies should be the desired objective, it is crucial to emphasize the economic viability and practicality of including these to individual growers. Historical, current, and future practices, which fall into each of the complementary integrated weed management practices, are identified and explained in this chapter.
