Since the late 1980s, the study of foreign language (FL) learning from original version (OV) audiovisual materials has had a relatively long-standing tradition in the field of second language acquisition. However, to date, most available research has focused on single words learning, targeted English as an FL, and explored whether OV audiovisual input should be presented with or without textual support (e.g., subtitles), as well as the audio-text language combination that is most beneficial for FL learning. This edited volume precisely deviates from previous investigations and broadens the scope of research on OV audiovisual input by targeting languages other than English (e.g., Dutch and French) and analyzing different aspects of FL learning besides vocabulary, including formulaic sequences, pronunciation development, pragmatics, and humor use. It also presents different teaching practices that can help to integrate OV audiovisual input into the FL classroom. In this introductory chapter, we present the background of this special collection on FL learning and teaching through OV audiovisual input, introduce the seven studies that put together the edited volume, and highlight the many contributions these studies make to the field of second language acquisition. The introduction concludes by outlining some ideas for future research, not addressed by the chapters that build the present volume.
