This chapter mostly covers laser wakefield acceleration. First we introduce the basics of particle acceleration by a longitudinal, oscillating field. Then, using simple models we analyze the structure of a nonlinear, relativistic plasma wave (including its wave-breaking limit) and estimate the related energy gain of electrons, and describe the generation of a plasma wake by a short laser pulse. A final section discusses electron acceleration by surface plasma waves.
