Poly(Lactic Acid) Blends in Biomedical Applications

This chapter titled “Poly(lactic acid) blends in biomedical applications” provides an in-depth study of the use of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and its blends in various biomedical contexts. PLA is recognized for its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, making it a preferred material in applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering and the development of medical implants. However, pure PLA exhibits limitations, including hydrophobicity and insufficient mechanical toughness, which can hinder its performance in demanding biomedical applications. To address these challenges, the blending of PLA with natural or synthetic polymers is necessary. This blending process enhances PLA's properties and creates novel characteristics suitable for specific biomedical applications. This chapter also covers a variety of current applications of PLA blends, including their roles in drug delivery systems, sutures and scaffolds for tissue engineering. By examining recent advancements and ongoing research, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the potential of PLA blends in the biomedical field, emphasizing their adaptability and the innovative approaches being developed to optimize their functionality in medical applications.
