Calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy enables elemental analysis without the requirement of preceding calibration with standard samples. The purpose of the present chapter is to draw a retrospective view of the physical model behind the method, and to offer a critical overview on the developments achieved since its introduction in 1999. Furthermore, the equipment and the experimental conditions required for accurate quantitative analysis are listed. Finally, based on an evaluation of the analytical performance, the improvements that are still necessary for the industrialization of calibration-free LIBS are discussed.
