This chapter uses the framework of diaspora positionality to analyze how different factions of the dissenting Iranian diaspora responded to the protests following Mahsa Jina Amini’s murder in 2022 that subsequently transformed into the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. The chapter complicates the idea of diaspora as a single entity by highlighting the diversity within the diasporas and showcasing how these internal differences impact diasporas’ public diplomacy efforts, particularly in cases when members of the diaspora engage in disruption and dissent. In particular, the chapter shows how different members of the Iranian diaspora who have different networks that leverage their political power have had to negotiate the complexity of representation and legitimacy as they struggled to unite against the Iranian state.
