Case Study of TBM Drive Beneath Riverbed with Low Overburden

One of the critical challenges in underground metro construction involves excavating twin tunnels beneath rivers with shallow overburden. This paper presents a numerical study on tunnelling with EPB TBMs beneath the river with an overburden of around 7 m. The tunnel passes through silty sand, with the water level in the river located at 1.5 m above the riverbed. To assess the risk of blow-out and potential deformations during TBM drive, numerical analysis using PLAXIS 3D is performed. The face pressure and tail grout pressures applied during TBM drive are computed using DAUB method following ITA guidelines. Additionally, buoyancy verification of the tunnel is carried out to assess the possibility of a floating failure. The paper also discusses probable risks and suggests several mitigation measures to be implemented during both the construction phase and service life of the tunnel.
