Area-Specific Correlation of Unconfined Compressive Strength of Rock Samples Considering PLI and RQD Using Multiple Linear Regression

Unconfined compressive strength is widely used in design work and is significantly reliable as a rock strength parameter. As an alternative to this expensive procedure, industries choose the point load index (PLI) test for its operational advantage. The efficiency of this replacement lies in the correlation between UCS and PLI parameters. Researchers conducted various studies to improve accuracy and made significant observations on major dependency factors like rock type, weathering, texture, grain size, moisture content, porosity, and density. The rock type proved to be the most influential among various factors. Apart from rock types, researchers also recognised the impact of weathering as it changes the microstructural formation of the parent material. This extensive dependency scenario of UCS-PLI correlation requires a site-specific, comprehensive experimental study to establish accurate correlations. The current study is focused on deriving these correlations specifically for the Gujarat region. A total of 123 data points were considered for this study, including different weathering effects. The correlation between the UCS value of rock, PLI, and RQD was proposed using multiple linear regression analysis. The predicted value was in good agreement with the experimental results.
