An ISO Approach to Assess Modulus of Elasticity of Soil Strata Using Menard Pressuremeter Test

With India solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing economies globally, the proliferation of large-scale projects stands as a cornerstone fueling this economic expansion. Central to the success of any infrastructure endeavor lies the meticulous design and construction of its foundational structure. In this context, Young’s Modulus or Modulus of Elasticity emerges as a pivotal parameter in the design process, particularly within soil strata. The Menard pressuremeter test represents a significant method for determining the “Es” value of soil, yet its utilization remains somewhat undervalued due to the complexities inherent in its conduction and analysis and the necessity for skilled personnel to conduct the test. While standards such as those established by IS and ASTM outline the procedural aspects of conducting the test, the analytical methodology for interpreting the resulting data often necessitates the consideration of specific parameters such as equipment calibration, size of test pocket. ISO 22476-4 offers guidelines for both conducting the test and analyzing the acquired data. This research paper endeavors to present a simplified approach to the analysis and calculation of Menard modulus using the pressuremeter test by eliminating all the uncertainties and complexities involved in data processing. Utilizing actual field data collected from a site situated in northern India characterized by alluvial soil deposits, this study aims to contribute to a clearer understanding of this crucial aspect of foundation design.
