Economical and Optimized Foundation System for Circular Storage Tanks and Silos
摘要
Ground improvement plays a vital role in today’s infrastructure development as a cost-effective alternate foundation solution. This paper presents two case histories of economical and optimized ground improvement foundation solution using stone columns for circular storage tanks and silos. The tank farm consists of three fuel tanks and two fire water tanks having diameter 13 m and 18 m and height of 15 m and 17 m. Silos consist of four nos. of main silos of diameter 32 m and one no. of pre-storage silo of diameter 8.34 m, respectively. Allowable post-construction settlement along the periphery of the tanks and silos shall be limited as per Indian Standards and project requirements. Due to the presence of 3-8 m thick loose compressible strata, the estimated settlement exceeds the allowable limit. To limit the settlement, vibro stone columns were designed based on the currently available Indian Standards and best international practices. Vibro stone columns were installed using dry bottom and wet top feed methods for the tank farm and silos, respectively.
