Analysis and Design of Excavation with Support System for Berth Construction Using Finite Element Method
摘要
With the increasing amount of cargo transport worldwide, designing and construction of berth structures have gained immense interest in deep foundation construction in coastal areas. Paradip Port was in the process of developing berth structures. For the base design, usage of diaphragm wall was envisaged as support system for a 25 m deep berth excavation process. The recommendation was safe but with the intention of more economical and indigenous production possibilities by an organization, the possibility of using sheet pile was explored as an alternative. Support system design of the Sheet Pile was carried out by means of finite element analysis, using PLAXIS, simulating the geometry, the sequence of excavation, sheet pile properties, subsoil stratification and properties and water level conditions of the sea. Three levels and lines of sheet piles were contemplated to be installed in a staggered manner before the excavation and the sequential process of excavation was analyzed. The results of analysis in terms of displacements, ground settlement, bottom heave, shear force and bending moments of the sheet piles developed were examined to conclude the design suitability. A stability check, on the system, was also carried out and found conclusive.
