Postacute infection syndrome (PAIS) is a clinical entity characterized by a complex array of symptoms that persist beyond the acute phase of infection, in a subset of individuals. While most commonly associated with viral pathogens PAIS may also follow other infectious etiologies. Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and long COVID are the best described, but PAIS may complicate over 20 acute infectious illnesses. Diagnosis is clinical, as there are no diagnostic tests. Symptoms may last months to years, and varying degrees of impairment may be present. Multiple remedies may be prescribed for symptomatic relief, but none is curative.
