Build, or weight in reference to height, has a long history in insurance underwriting. The most widely accepted measure is body mass index. Alternatives use waist circumference or measures of body fat which contribute to the definition of anthropometric obesity with normal BMI. Obesity and overweight prevalence have increased in recent decades, worldwide, and contribute to numerous comorbidities. Because of correlation with education and income, buyers of life, disability income, and long-term care insurance have less obesity than the general population. Both overweight and underweight associate with increased mortality and morbidity, independently of comorbidity.
