The volume of tropical fruits in world trade has been growing rapidly in recent years, largely because of improvements in transportation and shifts in consumer preferences. Aside from bananas, the vast majority (95%, FAO, Major tropical fruits—statistical compendium 2021. Rome, 2022) of the four major tropical fruits, mangoes (including mangosteens and guava), avocados, pineapples and papayas, are however still locally consumed.
