Field crops are not always consistently defined in the literature. For the purposes of this chapter, I shall therefore define field crops as field-grown, annual crops, which include FAO (2017) defined crop groupings like (dry) legumes, oilseeds, root and tuber, spice and beverages and ‘others’, but exclude cereals and vegetables which are covered in other chapters.
