As the demand and consumption of packaged and processed foods continue to grow, the need for safe, healthy, unadulterated food, complete information regarding its nutritional value, shelf-life, constituents and manufacturing process becomes an absolute necessity. The conventional ways of food packaging poses potential threats to the consumer’s health and often leads to environmental pollution, thus necessitating greener options for food packaging and preservation. The advanced eco-friendlyEco-friendly options to food preservation and packaging, aims not only at enhancing the quality of food, shelf-life and sustainability but also at mitigating environmental hazards. The current chapter sheds light on the significance of the newer advents of green nanotechnology in food packaging and preservation. While the wide variety of conventional techniques are available for food preservation, modern day technologies including smart packaging comprising of active and intelligent packaging, as well as the inclusion of green nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, nanoencapsulation, nanoemulsion, nanocomposites, nanofillers and nanoclays provide noteworthy enhancements in the food packaging arena. These alternatives ensure improved quality of packaging and food, thereby addressing the prevalent limitations of conventional methods. Furthermore, these advanced automated technologies enable the understanding and monitoring of food quality and signals the quality deterioration over the period in real-time, tackling the issues of conventional packaging and focusing on consumer beneficial packaging.
