Marine pollution is an increasingly serious threat to the world’s oceans and marine ecosystems, with detrimental effects on living resources, human health, marine activities, water quality, and coastal amenities. Ocean pollution is characterized as the introduction of deleterious substances or energy into marine environments. Over 80% of this pollution is attributed to terrestrial sources, including agricultural runoff, plastic refuse, and untreated sewage. Although traditional methodologies have been utilized to mitigate the ramifications of marine pollution, they frequently prove inadequate in tackling the fundamental causes. This limitation necessitates a more comprehensive approach that incorporates governmental action, public awareness campaigns, and investments in sustainable practices. Recently, green nanotechnology has surfaced as a promising instrument for addressing ocean pollution in an ecologically sustainable manner. It provides innovative methodologies for both the prevention and reduction of pollution at its source, employing novel materials and processes that minimize ecological damage. This chapter focuses on the various pollutants affecting marine ecosystems and explores sustainable techniques for ocean pollution control. Special attention is given to the application of green nanotechnology, highlighting its potential to revolutionize pollution mitigation. Despite its potential, green nanotechnology is not devoid of challenges, including potential high financial implications, scalability concerns, and the imperative for additional research regarding its long-term environmental consequences. By integrating advanced technological innovations with regulatory frameworks and public involvement, a more efficacious and sustainable strategy for managing marine pollution can be realized. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of these strategies to inspire further innovation in the field.
