An Overview of Real-Time Control for Managing Urban Groundwater Levels

Over the last century, significant changes have been observed in the global water cycle. Extreme rainfall events or unforeseen occurrences, such as drain clogging, can drastically raise urban groundwater levels (UGL), leading to flooding in critical areas and causing substantial economic losses. This article explores the integration of real-time control (RTC) techniques in managing urban groundwater levels. RTC, as an advanced approach, is effectively harnessing the full potential of water systems and optimizing their operational capabilities. By employing RTC specifically to regulate components within urban water networks, the need for significant investments in water infrastructure upgrades is reduced. Notably, with recent advancements in information technology and computer science, RTC has been established as a cornerstone of comprehensive urban water management strategies, underscoring its indispensability in the modern era.
