Research on Corrosion Protection of Ground Anchors and Soil Nails Based on European and American Standards

There are significant differences between the requirements of corrosion protection measures for ground anchors and soil nails in European and American standards compared to Chinese standards, which require sufficient attention in overseas engineering designs. This study summarizes the classification of ground corrosivity factors based on European and American standards and determines the corrosion protection class for ground anchors and soil nails according to the soil corrosivity classification. It explains the main corrosion protection measures for the tendon according to European and American standards, such as cement grout, sacrificial steel thickness, galvanized coatings, epoxy coatings, and encapsulations under different conditions, as well as the requirements for corrosion protection of the anchor heads. In engineering practices in Europe and America, double corrosion protection is becoming increasingly popular in the permanent anchor corrosion protection design. European and American standards generally do not rely solely on the corrosion protection of the cement grout, but also consider additional corrosion protection measures. The main requirements for corrosion protection of ground anchors and soil nails in Europe, the United States, and regions like Hong Kong are systematically reviewed, which can provide references for the design, construction of domestic and international engineering projects, as well as the revision of domestic standards.
