Research on the Wind Field Characteristics of Typical Ancient Architectures

Ancient architectures are usually at risk of wind-induced damage, and damaged by the wind actions. This study focuses wind characteristics affecting ancient buildings in Shanxi, China, and Japan’s Kinki region, focusing on Datong, Yuncheng, Nara, and Kyoto. The results show that Datong’s frequent strong northwest winds averaging 2.62 m/s, Yuncheng’s northeast winds at 2.27 m/s, and the milder climates of Nara and Kyoto with average speeds of 1.78 m/s and 2.08 m/s, respectively. A case study of Ying County’s pagoda highlights seasonal wind variations impacting structural integrity. The study emphasizes the need for conservation strategies to protect these cultural heritages from wind damage.
