A New Mathematical Model of the Exam Timetabling Problem at HUST

Designing an exam schedule for a university is a complex task that poses significant challenges to the person in charge. At Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), this task has become a tedious and time-consuming process due to the various constraints and a large volume of university data involved. To address this, a 0–1 integer programming model is proposed in this paper, which models two sub-problems: (a) the Exam Class Scheduling (ECS), involving the allocation of exams to specific periods and rooms, and (b) the Proctor Exam Assignment (PEA), which deals with assigning proctors to exams scheduled from ECS. The objective of this model is to minimize the number of exam rooms and proctors used. Using the Cplex optimizer 12.0 on a personal computer, we successfully solved the case of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FAMI) in HUST with moderate-sized data sets. Given that result, it is seen that the proposed model can produce a high-quality exam timetable in an acceptable amount of time.
