Imagination plays several roles, including that of an instigator—being at the origin of a development that will completely surpass it. This is notably the case with innovation, which utilizes imagination in hopes of surpassing it. Imagination and innovation are sometimes conflated without necessarily being close. They primarily rely on each other but are different, and although they don’t oppose each other, they are nevertheless on different grounds. While there can be imagination without innovation, clearly, there is no innovation without imagination; the root of the creation potentially gives rise to innovation.
