Validating and Sharing Open-Source and Vendor-Neutral Pulse Sequence Programs: A Practical Approach

A community-driven vendor-agnostic, open-source protocols (VOP) framework will expand the acquisition of reproducible MR data by collaboratively, safely, effectively, and ethically sharing magnetic resonance (MR) protocols. This consistent data is critical for the meaningful evaluation of novel methods in a multisite setting for clinical translation. MR protocols require precise control of pulses played on the different coils. The large number of parameters involved in pulse sequence design leads to multiple design iterations before routine use. Throughout the iterations, vendor-specific, arcane pulse programming software tools cause fragmenting of MR protocols. They are often a significant hurdle for collaborating researchers seeking to port state-of-the-art (SOTA) sequences onto new platforms. In multisite clinical studies, suboptimal sequences are usually chosen when at least one site cannot achieve the best technique due to vendor software limits. Still, these SOTA techniques are required for a meaningful study because of their access to necessary patients who benefit from scientific advances. The VOP framework will build on and refine the recently demonstrated open-source framework by scaling the framework to more international sites to demonstrate reproducible MR imaging. The framework will create a platform for MR sites possessing different vendors and software versions to access pulse sequences shared freely by the MR acquisition community to compare MR data quantitatively and foster new collaborations.
