This chapter introduces the basic concepts behind magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using mostly qualitative descriptions, topics included here span the three types of magnetic fields used in MRI, MR signal creation, signal relaxation and image contrast, generation of MR images, MR safety-related issues, and the emergence of AI in clinical MRI. The focus here is to provide a conceptual basis for understanding more specialized topics covered in other chapters of this book.
