Nanomaterials for Enhancing Fruit Yield and Quality

To meet the increasing demand for higher fruit yield and quality, various advanced agricultural techniques have been developed and refined. Among these, nanotechnology stands out as one of the most promising and transformative solutions in modern agriculture, particularly within the field of fruit production. Nanotechnology’s potential to revolutionize this sector is especially apparent in the development of nano fertilizers, which have demonstrated remarkable success in stimulating both vegetative and reproductive growth. By enhancing flowering and fruit set, nano fertilizers contribute to significant increases in crop yield and improve fruit quality by boosting nutrient uptake and optimizing metabolic processes within the plant. Beyond boosting productivity, nanotechnology also plays a crucial role in extending the shelf life of fruits and minimizing post-harvest losses, addressing key concerns in food security and supply chains. However, despite these benefits, the precise mechanisms through which nano fertilizers influence fruit trees and their physiological processes remain underexplored. This underscores the need for further research to fully understand their long-term effects and potential environmental impacts. This chapter delves into the expansive applications of nanotechnology in fruit production, emphasizing its roles in enhancing growth, increasing yield, improving plant tolerance to abiotic stress, and supporting pest control. It also highlights the future potential of nanosensors in precision agriculture, especially in fruit quality monitoring and sustainable farming practices.
