This chapter outlines the English household’s principal functions, including child rearing, keeping the family healthy, and providing accommodation, food, drink and clothes. Many tasks were labour intensive and servants were needed to spread the load though they were not an unmixed blessing. There were some limited technological changes in the period and these are signposted.
