Second-Life EV Batteries Application in Energy Storage Systems for Sustainable and Resilient Power Sector
摘要
The electrification of the transportation sector represents a significant stride towards a sustainable future, in line with international environmental goals. Although Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) herald a greener alternative to combustion engines, the environmental toll of their lithium-ion batteries is substantial. This paper delves into the application of circular economy practices to mitigate these environmental drawbacks by facilitating the reuse of EV batteries in secondary roles, beyond their initial vehicular function. Exploring the cradle-to-cradle approach, the study advocates for the utilization of EV batteries in stationary energy storage systems, thereby extending their utility and reducing waste. This paradigm shift is anchored in the life cycle of EV batteries, which encompasses production, active use, degradation, and eventual recycling. Post-vehicular application, these batteries may experience diminished capacity but retain sufficient functionality for less demanding energy storage tasks. This repurposing is critical from an ecological standpoint, enabling resource conservation and offering a cost-effective method to bolster the integration of renewable energy sources. The study elaborates on the eco-efficiency and economic viability of reusing EV batteries, underscoring the reduction of the environmental impact through elongated service life and decreased recycling burdens. It presents a comprehensive analysis of the end-of-life trajectory of EV batteries, emphasizing the necessity of strategic lifecycle management to ensure effective repurposing. The paper also sheds light on the potential of these batteries to fortify energy resilience, particularly by providing backup power in grid-tied renewable energy systems. Moreover, the discussion extends to the complexities of recycling EV batteries and the innovative methodologies that can be employed to enhance their second-life performance in energy storage systems. By examining the intersection of battery technology, renewable energy, and circular economy principles, the study presents a multifaceted view of the potential for second-life EV batteries to revolutionize energy storage and contribute to a more sustainable energy landscape. In sum, this research underlines the dual benefits of battery repurposing: bolstering environmental sustainability by extending the productive lifespan of batteries and improving energy efficiency in the power sector. It concludes that the strategic reuse of EV batteries in energy storage is a viable and promising avenue towards achieving a robust, resilient, and environmentally conscientious energy infrastructure.
