The chapter begins with an exposition of my credentials for engaging with it. I give a brief account of some of my experiences with the archeology of art in which I learned of the importance of the context of the art and its likely association with ritual. Recognizing that art is important for thinking, I try to show why it is too important to be left to those who “are interested in art.” I further foreshadow how art changes the seers who see it and is changed by being seen. It is complicated by the fact that most of the art of the past is symbolic, but we will see that the important part of symbols is the people who see them. I end with brief words on surveys of art history and show how the processes of art in the past have generally been glossed over.

摘要
