Basketball players are at risk for conditions like miliaria and intertrigo due to high levels of perspiration. Players are at risk for contact dermatitis from shoes and equipment used in the sport. The biomechanics of jump shots place basketball players at risk for traumatic subungual hematomas. The combination of skin-to-skin contact of players, saliva, and trauma predisposes basketball players to dermatophytic (e.g. tinea), bacterial (e.g. cellulitis), and viral (e.g. HSV) infections. The high-friction environment can exacerbate inflammatory skin conditins (e.g. acne mechanica). Miliaria rubra is a dermatologic condition characterized by the obstruction of eccrine sweat glands, which disrupts normal sweat extraction and leads to significant skin complications. The pathophysiology involves blockage of sweat ducts, resulting in sweat accumulation within the dermis and epidermis and the formation of inflammatory vesicles beneath the sweat glands. This is primarily mediated by cutaneous debris and bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis.
