Originally characterized by high biodiversity, humid tropical forests have now been largely converted into a range of land uses, from a broader landscape perspective, these forests exhibit a mosaic structure, where remnants of natural forest vegetation coexist with crops and cattle pastures. Despite this transformation, their soils still can support a wide number of plant species, and store significant amounts of carbon in the form of organic matter or humus.
