Tepetates (hardened volcanic sediments) hold great potential for rehabilitation and cultivation. With appropriate techniques, such as breaking through the hard layer and incorporating large amounts of well-processed and stabilized organic residues, these soils can be converted into productive Anthrosols. Within just three years of applying the recommended soil management practices, these transformed soils can begin to yield acceptable productivity levels, offering a hopeful outlook for sustainable agriculture.
