The concluding chapter provides a synthetic overview of the main arguments of the book, structured around the core themes that underlie the whole study. The author assesses the role of the ‘Turkish threat’ in Greece’s relationship with the West, analyses the concept of ‘democratic stability’ that defined Western analysis, and discusses the diminishing—but still dominant—role of the Cold War in international relations, as well as Greece’s position in the East-West confrontation. Additionally, the chapter reassesses Greece’s room of manoeuver under the ND and PASOK governments and argues that the Greek case shows that we have to reassess and rediscover the role of the smaller players in the Cold War, particularly their influence on the decision-making processes of the major international actors. Finally, the author discusses the political and cultural factors that made Greece’s relationship with the West ‘difficult’.
