The Introduction outlines the scope and the main goals of the study. It puts forward its main arguments while also providing background information for less informed readers, including a brief section on Greece’s relationship with the West in the longue durée, which describes how this relationship evolved over time. This section also introduces the reader to the events that serve as the study’s starting point, the Cyprus crisis of 1974 and the fall of the military regime. The Introduction also situates the study within the existing bibliography, highlights key methodological considerations (including the extensive collection of sources consulted by the author), and discusses concepts central to the narrative such as the Cold War and the democratic transitions in Southern Europe. Although historians have started examining several aspects of Greek post-1974 foreign policy, such as Greece’s accession to the EEC and US-Greek relations, a comprehensive study on the Greek and Western high strategies, policies, and decisions that led to Greece’s full integration into the West is still missing. This study aspires to fill exactly this bibliographical gap.
