Juan Manuel Santos, former president of Colombia (2010–2018) and 2016 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is globally recognized for his role in managing the world’s longest-running armed conflict: the Colombian armed conflict with FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia). This chapter examines Santos’s profile as a negotiator and highlights key lessons drawn from his successful peace process. President Santos is notable for his perseverance, tenacity, and ability to employ effective negotiation strategies while understanding the needs of victims and placing them at the center of the agreement. Santos began laying the groundwork for peace negotiations long before his presidency, highlighting a long-term strategy. Diplomatic acumen and networking skills also defined Santos’s approach. He engaged the international community to enhance trust among the parties involved and reestablished bilateral relations with key countries for Colombia. Finally, Santos assembled, to lead the peace talks, a team of diverse negotiators with complementary expertise, including three key figures in critical roles.
