Lung cancer ranks high among the many cancers that claim to live in the USA. More women have died from lung cancer than breast cancer since 1987. Approximately 160,000 Americans lose their lives to lung cancer each year, and the disease is predicted to produce 225,000 new cases each year. Curiously, at the turn of the twentieth century, lung cancer was a rare occurrence. The growth in smoking among both sexes is mainly responsible for its meteoric ascent in the subsequent decades. The two most common types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). About 85% of lung cancers are non-small-cell lung tumors. More specific subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exist according to histology, including adenocarcinoma, SCC, and large cell carcinoma.
