Dementia and Oral Health
摘要
Individuals with dementia experience cognitive decline that limits their ability to perform daily activities, including oral hygiene. Maintaining oral health is essential to prevent complications affecting overall health and quality of life. Cognitive deterioration, dry mouth, and high sugar intake increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss. Poor oral health can lead to infections that spread to other parts of the body. Preventive oral care should begin as soon as dementia is diagnosed. As dependency increases, caregivers must assist with oral hygiene. Regular dental examinations help detect and treat problems early. Dentists should design treatment plans and provide care in clinics or at home. This chapter provides key information for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to maintain oral health and avoid complications that impact physical and mental well-being.
