Echocardiography is essential for planning an anaesthetic for a child with a cardiac condition. Knowing how to read and interpret an Echo helps with decisions about anaesthetic technique and monitoring. An Echo provides both a detailed anatomical as well as a functional assessment. Stenotic lesion can be assessed in terms of gradient, regurgitant lesions in terms of the regurgitant fraction, shunt lesions can be assessed for amount of blood flow, direction of flow, as well as static and dynamic components.
