From there, the play’s origin story gets decidedly murkier, as he briefly returned to it a year later but then inexplicably abandoned it for nearly a decade, during which another devastating global war occurred and the initial world-bettering prospects of authoritarianism (at least in the hands of Hitler and Mussolini) tarnished rapidly for the playwright.
