This chapter highlights the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in assessing renewable energy sources (RES) potential and supporting informed decision-making. GIS enables stakeholders to analyze resource availability, environmental conditions, and economic feasibility through spatial data and mapping. By estimating the RES potential, identifying deployment constraints, and quantifying CO \(_2\) reductions, GIS aids in strategic planning for RES projects. The chapter explores key GIS applications, including the IRENA Global Atlas and NASA’s POWER Project, which provide RES maps at global and regional scales. GIS combined with Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) is shown to be particularly effective for selecting locations for RES technologies, such as wind power plants and hybrid systems, with suitability maps guiding deployment. GIS-based methods help overcome these by assessing resource potential and supporting policies to raise awareness. Through case studies at continental, regional, and urban scales, GIS’s role in identifying high-potential sites and optimizing SGE deployment is illustrated, underscoring its value in achieving sustainable energy goals.
