Kaempferia parviflora Wall.ex.Baker is a medicinal plant belonging to the Kaempferia genus, Zingiberaceae family. The K. parviflora rhizome has extended experience use for health promotion, reduced gastric stomach ulcers, digestive stimulant and antidysenteric, boosting blood circulation, other biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, inhibition of cholinesterase, inhibition of NO production, and improve sexual activities for men… In this study, tyrosinase inhibitory, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of K. parviflora rhizome ethanol extract has been investigated. Several methods have been used in this study, including agar contact method for antibacterial activity testing, DPPH test for antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibitory activity method. K. parviflora extract has capable activity against 4 strains of bacteria: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), E. coli with a zone of inhibition from 10–19 mm. At a concentration of 250 µg/mL, the extract was able to capture more than 70% of DPPH free radicals. The tyrosinase inhibition test showed that the tyrosinase inhibitor IC50 of K. parviflora extract was 0.19 ± 0.00 mg/mL compared with kojic acid of 0.07 ± 0.00 mg/mL. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of K. parviflora extract was also not significantly different from kojic acid, with P < 0.05. Thus, the rhizome ethanol extract of K. parviflora possesses sharply high antibacterial and tyrosinase inhibitory abilities and a bit lower antioxidant ability. The results show that K. parviflora is a promising resource of raw bioactive materials for application in skin care products.
