Xylan, a polysaccharide commonly found in plant cell walls, demonstrates the potential for various applications in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. The gelling properties of Vietnamese yanang (Tiliacora triandra) suggest the abundance of xylan present in the leaves of the plant; however, little research in Vietnam has been done on the extraction of xylan from this species and its application. This study reports the optimized extraction conditions of xylan from Vietnamese yanang leaves and the fabrication of a film from the extracted xylan for incorporation in a hydrogel system for biomedical applications. The extracted xylan was characterized for chemical composition, solubility, and rheological properties. The extraction condition of 1:20 leaf to water, 50 ℃, and 100 min was found to be the most optimal. The xylan sample with the highest yield was subsequently used for solubility testing, which demonstrated the low solubility of xylan in water. Rheological testing revealed the non-Newtonian nature of the extracted yanang leaf xylan solution, with shear-thinning flow behavior observable at concentrations of 4% and below. The xylan solution with the highest solubility was then cast into a film. Assessments of surface morphology, compressive strength, swelling degree, degradation, and cytotoxicity were performed on the fabricated film. The fabricated film exhibits moderate compressive strength, high swelling degree, adequate mechanical properties, biodegradability, and non-cytotoxicity, possessing potential for biomedical applications.
