At the time of writing this chapter we know nearly one hundred mergers of compact objects observed in gravitational waves. In this chapter I summarize the observations and their statistical properties. I also review the potential scenarios of formation of merging compact object binaries. Finally I will compare the models with observations. No model can explain the properties of the observed population, suggesting that we are dealing with more than one formation path. I will discuss the possibility to limit these scenarios with further observations.

摘要

At the time of writing this chapter we know nearly one hundred mergers of compact objects observed in gravitational waves. In this chapter I summarize the observations and their statistical properties. I also review the potential scenarios of formation of merging compact object binaries. Finally I will compare the models with observations. No model can explain the properties of the observed population, suggesting that we are dealing with more than one formation path. I will discuss the possibility to limit these scenarios with further observations.
