Citrus is one of the most commercialized fruits in the global market due to its high palatability and nutritional value besides being a source of numerous potent ingredients in pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors. In recent days, there is a steady rise in demand for seedless citrus fruits among the consumers and food industries both for fresh consumption and processed products thereby intriguing the fruit breeders to incorporate the development of seedless cultivars in different citrus species as one of the major objectives in crop improvement programme. According to experimental studies, major factors influencing seedlessness in different species of citrus are gametophytic self-incompatibility, male and female sterility and embryo abortion. However, citrus being a highly heterozygous crop with long juvenile phase, inducing seedlessness or parthenocarpy solely through conventional breeding methods is a challenging effort. Therefore, integration of conventional methods with biotechnological approaches is considered as an efficient way to impart seedlessness in citrus without degrading the desirable fruit qualities. Several eminent researchers have released promising seedless citrus cultivars and many are still under multi-locational trial. ‘PAU Kinnow-1’and ‘Pamindo Agrihorti’ pummelo are two of the recently released seedless mutants derived from gamma irradiation of bud wood. Some other seedless cultivars are ‘URS Campestre’ orange, ‘Shiangshui’ lemon, ‘Yellow Bell’ lemon, ‘TDE’ mandarin hybrids and ‘Gold Nugget’ mandarin.
