A Reference Model Paradigm

Transitioning from homogeneous to heterogeneous multi-agent systems, this chapter introduces the reference model paradigm as a structured approach to synchronization. It decomposes the synchronization problem into two tasks: achieving consensus among homogeneous reference models and regulating agent outputs to align with these references. The chapter outlines four key techniques: reference model matching, feedforward design, and two internal model-based approaches, which are explored in detail in subsequent chapters.
