The study of automotive technology is one of the original programs at Red River College Polytechnic in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, dating back to at least 1948. Over the years, the programs, student profiles, automotive industry, and automotive technologies have evolved significantly. Today, the automotive repair industry employs a diverse workforce and commonly promotes values of honesty and commitment to community, making academic integrity more important than ever. In this vocational vignette, a Red Seal Automotive Service Technician shares her experience enacting a duty of care as an educational assistant in Automotive Technologies programs. The strategies discussed include personal readiness, creating healthy learning environments, team and material preparedness, and professional development. The authors illustrate how these strategies have been used to overcome challenges and cultivate a culture of integrity by building a trusting environment where empathy and compassion are prioritized. The chapter concludes with a description of two workshops designed to link academic integrity to industry values, helping students understand the relevance to their future careers.
