Student Engagement in Geomatics Engineering Technology Assessments

As a detailed and technical profession, integrity is integral to geomatics engineering technology. This field is focused on the use of technology for measurement and communication of those measurements. Satellites, airborne, and terrestrial platforms are used to measure the earth’s surface or within the earth’s surface to develop accurate models and deliverables of high accuracy to a client. A geomatics engineering technology instructor in a Canadian polytechnic institution shares how assessments that are designed to engage student passion will empower learning about a topic over aiming for a grade. Several successful techniques have emerged from practice to help increase engagement in the material. One technique is providing students with choices in project scope, grade weighting, and submission format. A second technique focuses on interpretation and analysis rather than the process. While the process can be taught to get students to a result, the soft skill of communicating what they did and what the result shows provides a clearer assessment of learning. A third option is zero-risk submission, where the student can submit an infinite number of times until they are happy with their result or a deadline is met. Using these techniques, the author shares observations that students exhibit higher levels of engagement and improved academic integrity in their learning.
