Energy Access in Rural Communities: A Trade-Off Between Costs and Revenue

This section highlights the interconnected challenges of limited access to energy services and insufficient economic activity in rural areas of SSA. It explores the region’s abundant untapped renewable energy resources and the availability of arable land for crop farming as unique opportunities. These factors present a pathway to establish a sustainable business model that integrates renewable energy-based decentralized systems for energy supply with economic development driven by crop farming. To address the dynamic and complex interactions between energy companies and crop farming communities, a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework is utilized. This framework employs a multi-objective optimization approach with two primary objectives: maximizing revenue and minimizing costs. The Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NDSGA-II) is applied to identify the optimal trade-off between these objectives, facilitating improved accessibility to energy services in rural areas of SSA.
