The spatiotemporal distribution of two Palaemon shrimps was investigated on two sites, Grandcamp Maisy (GRE) and Blainville-sur-Mer (BLE), on the English Channel coast (Normandy, France). Seasonal monitoring (spring, summer, autumn 2022 and winter 2023) on 15 sampling stations (three transects and five hypsometric levels) at GRE and nine sampling stations (three transects and three hypsometric levels) at BLE revealed the presence of two species, Palaemon serratus and Palaemon elegans. The abundances of both species showed seasonal variations linked to reproduction and recruitment, and also to foreshore-offshore migrations in the case of P. serratus. Spatially, on the intertidal zone, P. elegans was more prevalent at higher hypsometric levels, while P. serratus was more abundant at lower levels, except in autumn when young shrimps were recruited at the highest hypsometric levels. The width of the “ecological niche” was greater for P. serratus than for P. elegans at GRE, and particularly variable for P. serratus at this site. Finally, the greatest niche overlap was recorded in summer (GRE)—autumn (BLE), but remained quite limited throughout the seasons (maximum value of 0.246 at BLE). Although both studied species shared biological similarities (both belonging to the Palaemonidae family) and ecological common features (e.g. presence in the rocky intertidal zone). The results obtained suggest a relatively limited interspecific competition between the two species.
