This chapter will explore the challenge of how to design and use AI systems with a focus on human diversity. Automation systems are not designed, and do not operate, in a void. They are created in places with a specific culture, and they are spread around the world more often than not with the expectation that they will work as intended. Usually though, they tend to work as designed. They are not only adopted but also adapted. What cultural biases get encoded in the algorithmic models, and can they be culturally redesigned? These are not necessarily new questions. However, this chapter proposes a perspective that takes into consideration both the diversity of individuals and cultures and a critical approach to the possible blindspots that the very definition of what culture means creates when attempting to design “culturally sensitive” algorithms.
