This chapter examines the literature to provide an understanding of the current place of women in leadership in the higher education space and to uncover ways to boost their leadership participation. The chapter adds to the voices of scholars who are championing the inclusion of women in academic leadership. Guided by Critical Theory, the chapter seeks to enhance sustainable inclusive education by advocating for increased female leadership in higher education institutions and thus advance the principles and philosophy of inclusive education. An examination of the current position of women in HEIs lays a foundation for understanding the challenges facing inclusive education. In addition, the ‘why’ of women’s leadership in higher academic institutions is addressed. This chapter advocates a methodical, process-based approach to ensuring the advancement of women in leadership position for sustainable inclusive education.
